Share
If you’re new to padel, the rules can feel like a mix of tennis and squash. Here’s a quick breakdown to get you confident on court — especially useful for new players learning how to play padel in the UK.
Padel Scoring System
Same as tennis: 15–30–40–Game
Best of 3 sets, with 6 games per set (tiebreak at 6–6)
You win a point when your opponents can’t return the ball or commit a fault
Serving in Padel
Underarm only
The ball must bounce once behind the service line, then hit diagonally into the opponent’s box
The serve must be below waist height and land between the service box and the side glass
Using the Walls in Padel
You can play off the glass walls after the ball bounces on your side
You can’t hit the ball directly into your own glass without it bouncing on your side first
You can hit the ball off your own wall if it's after your opponent's shot
Common Padel Mistakes
Not letting the ball bounce before playing off the back glass
Serving too high or into the net
Smashing too early (timing is key!)
Not moving together with your partner — padel is all about teamwork
